I noticed today that a lot of flags are flying half mast which I assume is for the victims of the Virginia Tech shooting. I guess I don't really know much about this tribute, but I thought it was reserved for members of the government, people in positions of leadership, and war heroes. I guess I need to do some research.
Regardless, I was curious to get your thoughts or opinions on whether or not the flags should fly half mast for the VT victims. I'm not sure what I think, but I would like to hear from others.
Wikipedia says flying the flag half mast is a signal for mourning. And more importantly, here's what I found:
From www.whitehouse.gov on 4/17/2007
USA flags should be flown at half staff through sunset on the 4/22/07
Honoring the Victims of the Tragedy at Virginia Tech

I also direct that the flag shall be flown at half-staff for the same length of time at all United States embassies, legations, consular offices, and other facilities abroad, including all military facilities and naval vessels and stations.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this seventeenth day of April, in the year of our Lord two thousand seven, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-first.

Hhhmmm...I'm not sure what to think either. I guess it makes sense. From what I've read, the shootings at VT seem to have shaken everyone in America up.
At first I thought, another school shooting (isn't my respone awful). But then this past Sunday my pastor had a few words to say about it.
"We should be showing the world our complete and total love, the way Christ did for us. This young man had shown the world only hatred
If only someone had taken the Time to show him that they cared."
I do wonder, What if?
At first, I didn't think anything of it...perhaps my lack of knowledge on the appropriate displays of the flag is to blame.
I have a couple different thoughts on the matter now. I am a Bush fan...so it is hard to be critical of him, but I would hope that this gesture was not a political move...something to boost his approval ratings.
I've seen some newscasts question why the same is not being done for the troops. These same newscasts will find anything on which they can bash Bush...he's doing too much, he's not doing enough. One newscaster said there's a certain "shock value" to the school shootings at VT. And I would agree. I work at a university, so this hit a little closer to home. It could happen anywhere.
It's just a sad state that our world is in. There is no respect for human life.
