You may or may not know that I now work at my local courthouse. I'm a civil clerk and we work on landlord-tenant cases, peace and protective orders, and all civil cases under $30,000. It's quite an interesting job and I've learned alot so far.
One thing I have learned is that there are a lot of crazy people out there. I could probably tell at least one "crazy person of the week" story. Sometimes it takes a lot of self-control not to tell people what I REALLY think, but I'd like to keep my job, so I don't. :)
Here is a conversation I had recently with a woman who came up to our counter:
(As yet undetermined) Crazy Lady: I'm here to pick up my civil check.
J: *quizzical look* Excuse me?
[In My Head: .... huh....?]
CL: I'm here to pick up my civil check.
J: Do you have a case here?
[IMH: what in the world is she talking about? maybe she thinks she picks up the money from her judgment here?]
CL: Yeah.
J: Do you have a case number?
CL: No, but you can look up my name in the computer.
J: What's your name?
*CL gives name, I look it up*
J: What's your address?
CL: Oh, I have many addresses.
[IMH: Hm. That might be a red flag.]
J: I only have one case with your name but in this case, you are listed as the defendant. Did you come from court?
CL: No, George Bush told me to come down and pick up my civil check.
J: George Bush, the President?
CL: Yeah.
[IMH: Okay, here we go. She might be a little nuts.]
J: We don't have anything like that here.
CL: Well, she told me to come down here and get my civil check.
J: Who told you?
CL: The judge.
[IMH: oh, so now it's the judge that told her.... definitely nuts]
J: Which judge?
CL: She had dark hair.
J: We only have one female judge here and she doesn't have dark hair.
CL: Well, I work for George Bush and I need my civil check.
J: George Bush, the President?
CL: Yes.
[IMH: okay, why is she looking at me like this is completely normal when she has clearly lost her mind?]
I went back and forth a few more times with her and finally got her to understand you don't just get to come to the courthouse and pick up money. Just another fun day at the courthouse!
