The Economy Is So Bad That...

I got a pre-declined credit card in the mail.

I ordered a burger at McDonalds and the kid behind the counter asked, "Can you afford fries with that?"

CEOs are now playing miniature golf.

If the bank returns your check marked "Insufficient Funds," you call them and ask if they meant you or them.

Hot Wheels and Matchbox stocks are trading higher than GM.

McDonalds is now selling the quarter ouncer.

Parents in Beverly Hills fired their nannies and learned their children's names.

A truckload of Americans was caught sneaking into Mexico.

Motel Six won't leave the light on anymore.

The Mafia is laying off judges.

ExxonMobil laid off 25 congressmen.

Congress says they are looking into this Bernard Madoff scandal. Oh great! The guy who made $50 billion disappear is being investigated by the people who made $1.5 Trillion disappear.

Odd.

Kelly Hildebrandt will marry Kelly Hildebrandt.

This isn't a joke. An engaged Florida couple has the same first and last name.

Here's how it all started: 20-year-old Kelly Hildebrandt decided to search Facebook for other people with her name. Up popped Kelly Hildebrandt of Lubbock, Texas. For the next three months the two exchanged e-mails and then started calling each other.

Then he decided to visit, and the couple soon began dating. Eight months after Kelly Hildebrandt sent her first e-mail, he proposed. The couple plans to marry in October.

It hasn't been all smooth sailing. A trip on a cruise ship almost got canceled when the travel agent deleted one ticket from the system, thinking someone had plugged in the same information twice.

Hmmmm..... I want to comment but I will refrain. :o)

23 Flavors of Deliciousness

DR PEPPER ARTIFACT MAY REVEAL SOFT DRINK'S ORIGIN

DALLAS — Poking through antiques stores while traveling through the Texas Panhandle, Bill Waters stumbled across a tattered old ledger book filled with formulas.

He bought it for $200, suspecting he could resell it for five times that. Turns out, his inkling about the book's value was more spot on than he knew. The Tulsa, Okla., man eventually discovered the book came from the Waco, Texas, drugstore where Dr Pepper was invented and includes a recipe titled "D Peppers Pepsin Bitters."

"I began feeling like I had a national treasure," said Waters, 59.

Dr Pepper's manufacturer says the recipe is not the secret formula for the modern day soft drink, but the 8 1/2-by-15 1/2 inch book is expected to sell between $50,000 to $75,000 when it goes up for auction at Dallas-based Heritage Auction Galleries on May 13.

"It probably has specks of the original concoction on its pages," Waters said.

Waters discovered the book, its yellowed pages stained brown on the edges, underneath a wooden medicine bottle crate in a Shamrock antiques store last summer. A couple months after buying it, he took a closer look as he prepared to sell it on eBay.

He noticed there were several sheets with letterheads hinting at its past, like a page from a prescription pad from a Waco store titled "W.B. Morrison & Co. Old Corner Drug Store." An Internet search revealed Dr Pepper, first served in 1885, was invented at the Old Corner Drug Store in Waco by a pharmacist named Charles Alderton. Wade Morrison was a store owner.

Faded letters on the book's fraying brown cover say "Castles Formulas." John Castles was a partner of Morrison's for a time and was a druggist at that location as early as 1880, said Mary Beth Webster, collections manager at the Dr Pepper Museum and Free Enterprise Institute in Waco.

As he gathered more information, Waters took a slower turn through the book's more than 360 pages, which are filled with formulas for everything from piano polish to a hair restorer to a cough syrup. He eventually spotted the "D Peppers Pepsin Bitters" formula.

"It took three or four days before I actually realized what I had there," Waters said.

The recipe written in cursive in the ledger book is hard to make out, but ingredients seem to include mandrake root, sweet flag root and syrup.

It isn't a recipe for a soft drink, says Greg Artkop, a spokesman for the Plano-based Dr Pepper Snapple Group. He said it's likely instead a recipe for a bitter digestive that bears the Dr Pepper name.

He said the recipe certainly bears no resemblance to any Dr Pepper recipes the company knows of. The drink's 23-flavor blend is a closely guarded secret, only known by three Dr Pepper employees, he said.

Michael Riley, chief cataloger and historian for Heritage Auction Galleries, said they think it's an early recipe for Dr Pepper.

"We just feel like it's the earliest version of it," he said.

He hasn't, however, tested that theory by trying to mix up a batch. Neither has Waters; he's thought about it but would need to find someone to decipher all the handwriting.

Jack McKinney, executive director of the Waco museum, surmised that Alderton might have been giving customers something for their stomachs and added some Dr Pepper syrup to make it taste better.

"I don't guess there's any definitive answer. It's got to be the only one of its kind," Riley said.
McKinney said the ledger book was bound to be popular with Dr Pepper collectors because it's from the time the drink was invented.

Riley said the book was probably started around 1880 and used through the 1890s. It's not known who wrote the Dr Pepper recipe in the book, but they don't think it was the handwriting of Alderton or Morrison. Some of the formulas have Alderton's name after them.

At first, Alderton's drink inspired by the smells in the drugstore was called "a Waco." "People would come in and say, 'Shoot me a Waco,'" Riley said.

Soon renamed Dr Pepper, the drink caught on and other stores in town began selling it. Eventually, Alderton got out of the Dr Pepper business and Morrison and a man named Robert Lazenby started a bottling company in 1891.

Flipping through the pages of the ledger book takes one back to a time when drugstores were neighborhood hubs, selling everything from health remedies to beauty products mixed up by the stores' chemists. And among the formulas being mixed up in drugstores were treats for the soda fountain. A two-page spread in Waters' book has recipes for "Soda Water Syrups," including pineapple, lemon and strawberry.

"There were very few national brands," Riley said. "Their lifeblood was all their formulas."

Mickey Ds Better Watch Its Back

I just saw a commercial for the new "southern style" chicken sandwich that McDs is offering. The commerical said the sandwich had two pickles. Huh? And what, pray tell, does THAT sound like? Even Wikipedia gets it right: "Southern Style Chicken Sandwich - A southern style chicken breast, on a steamed bun, dressed with butter and two pickles. Very similar to a Chick-fil-A chicken sandwich."

Oh no they did'nt.

Here is what another blogger had to say:

The McDonald's version comes in a cardboard box, and upon opening, looks pretty much like a Chick-fil-A...only a tad smaller. There's a bun slathered in just the right amount of butter, two pickles and a golden chicken breast. It even smells like a Chick-fil-A sandwich. Then I take a bite.

At first blush, the taste seems almost identical. Then I start to really examine my own taste buds. There's definitely something missing. It's obviously the seasoning that Chick-fil-A has been using for all these years that gives the chicken such a distinctive taste. The McDonald's sandwich also uses a seasoning, and it's good, but it doesn't have the same "kick" as Chick-fil-A. That's not to say the McDonald's chicken sandwich is bad...in fact it's quite tasty, and those world famous french fries don't hurt either. The McDonald's meal seemed "lighter" and didn't overfill me as Chick-fil-A sometimes does.

Bottom line: I'd eat the McDonald's sandwich again. Will it hurt Chick-fil-A's sales? Possibly...especially since McDonald's has better fries. Full disclosure: I've actually gone to Chick-fil-A, then stopped at McDonald's to get fries. Get rid of those doormats, Chick-fil-A! Win me back over, before I turn to the dark side. ****

Y'all should know that I love me some Chick-Fil-A and conversely that I don't eat at McDs unless I'm in dire straights. All I got to say is McDs better stay out of anymore Chick-Fil-A territory. :)

Coolest Mom Ever

I found this story and just had to share it. If only more parents would be like this! Maybe someday the kid will thank his mom.

Mom Sells Rule-Breaking Son's Car

DES MOINES, Iowa — JH has dubbed herself the "meanest mom on the planet." After finding alcohol in her son's car, she decided to sell the car and share her 19-year-old's misdeed with everyone by placing an ad in the local newspaper.

The ad reads: "OLDS 1999 Intrigue. Totally uncool parents who obviously don't love teenage son, selling his car. Only driven for three weeks before snoopy mom who needs to get a life found booze under front seat. $3,700/offer. Call meanest mom on the planet."

JH has heard from people besides interested buyers since recently placing the ad in the paper. The 48-year-old from Fort Dodge says she has fielded more than 70 telephone calls from emergency room technicians, nurses, school counselors and even a Georgia man who wanted to congratulate her.

"The ad cost a fortune, but you know what? I'm telling people what happened here," JH says. "I'm not just gonna put the car for resale when there's nothing wrong with it, except the driver made a dumb decision. It's overwhelming the number of calls I've gotten from people saying 'Thank you, it's nice to see a responsible parent.' So far there are no calls from anyone saying, 'You're really strict. You're real overboard, lady.'"

The only critic is her son, who JH says is "very, very unhappy" with the ad and claims the alcohol was left by a passenger. Hambleton believes her son but has decided mercy isn't the best policy in this case. She says she set two rules when she bought the car at Thanksgiving: No booze, and always keep it locked.

The car has been sold, but JH says she will continue the ad for another week just for the feedback.

Your Thoughts

So, by now, you prollie all know about Britney's 16 year old sister being pregnant. I'm curious as to what y'all think about it.

I haven't thought too much about it and wasn't shocked by any means. It's not like she's the first 16 year old that ever got pregnant. It's certainly sad that they claim to be "devout Christians".

You know, in our country, more than ever "safe sex" and birth control are jammed down kids' throats. And yet, it doesn't really seem to make a difference in the teen pregnancy rate.

Anyhoo, just wondered what y'all thought, if anything.

Great News Story

There's too few of these types of news stories out there!

Heisman Trophy Winner Tim Tebow Could Have Been a Victim of Abortion
December 9, 2007

New York, NY-- University of Florida quarterback Tim Tebow became the first sophomore in the history of the NCAA to win the coveted Heisman Trophy as the best football player in the nation. However, Tebow's accomplishments may never have been supported had his mother followed a doctor's recommendation to have an abortion.

With 29 passing touchdowns and 22 rushing touchdowns, Tebow displayed the kind of versatility that has become more valued at the quarterback position.

Pam Tebow and her husband were Christian missionaries in the Philippines in 1985 and they prayed for "Timmy" before she became pregnant.

Unfortunately, Pam entered into a coma after she contracted amoebic dysentery, an infection of the intestine caused by a parasite found in a contaminated food or drink.

The treatment for the medical condition would require strong medications that doctors told Pam had caused irreversible damage to Tim -- so they advised her to have an abortion.

As the Sun reported, Pam Tebow refused the abortion and cited her Christian faith as the reason for her hope that her son would be born without the devastating disabilities physicians predicted.

Pam ultimately spent the last two months of her pregnancy in bed and, eventually, gave birth to a health baby boy in August 1987.

As she told the newspaper, Pam was not surprised that her son would be up for the Heisman despite no underclassman receiving the award since its inception in 1933.

"The combination of Timmy's God-given talent, hard work, character and leadership have made a mark on and off the football field," she said.

Because Tim Tebow was spared, he's wowed a nation by his athletic skill and, at his younger age, has an opportunity to become the second person to win two Heisman awards.

Eat At Your Own Risk

So, I signed onto instant messenger today and was assaulted with this headline: "20 WORST FOODS IN AMERICA". My curiosity was piqued so I decided to find out if I eat anything on the "worst foods" list... or rather, HOW MANY things on the list I eat. ;-)

So, in case you're interested, here you go [obviously I didn't include the whole list, just the ones I found most interesting... or sad, depending on how you look at it]:

20: Worst fast-food chicken meal: Chicken Selects Premium Breast Strips from McDonald's (5 pieces) with creamy ranch sauce [830 calories; 55 grams (g) fat; (4.5 g trans fat); 48 g carbohydrates]

19: Worst drink: Jamba Juice Chocolate Moo'd Power Smoothie (30 fl oz) [900 calories; 10 g fat; 183 g carbs; (166 g sugar)] Jamba Juice calls it a smoothie; we call it a milk shake. In fact, this beverage contains as much sugar as 2 pints of Ben & Jerry's butter pecan ice cream. What?!

17: Worst 'healthy' burger: Ruby Tuesday Bella Turkey Burger [1,145 calories; 71 g fat; 56 g carbs] Wow. I love turkey burgers.

16: Worst Mexican entree: Chipotle Mexican Grill Chicken Burrito [1,179 calories; 47 g fat; 125 g carbs] Oh man, I love Chipotle!

14: Worst sandwich: Quiznos Classic Italian (large) [1,528 calories; 92 g fat; 4,604 mg sodium; 110 g carbs] 92 grams of fat?! My word!

13: Worst salad: On the Border Grande Taco Salad with Taco Beef [1,450 calories; 102 g fat; 78 g carbs; 2,410 mg sodium] Okay, now this is Taco Bell, what do you expect? But still, a SALAD with that many calories and fat grams?! Amazing!

10: Worst breakfast: Bob Evans Caramel Banana Pecan Cream Stacked and Stuffed Hotcakes [1,540 calories; 77 g fat; 198 g carbs (109 g sugar)] Five Egg McMuffins yield the same caloric cost as this stack of sugar-stuffed flapjacks, which is truly a heavy breakfast, weighing in at a hefty pound and a half.

9: Worst dessert: Chili's Chocolate Chip Paradise Pie with Vanilla Ice Cream [1,600 calories; 78 g fat; 215 g carbs] Would you eat a Big Mac for dessert? How about three? That's the calorie equivalent of this decadent dish. Oh. my. word.

5: Worst pizza: Uno Chicago Grill Chicago Classic Deep Dish Pizza [2,310 calories ; 162 g fat; 123 g carbs; 4,470 mg sodium] Man, I wish I hadn't read this one. I love Uno's deep dish pizza!

1: The worst food in America: Outback Steakhouse Aussie Cheese Fries with Ranch Dressing [2,900 calories;182 g fat; 240 g carbs]

Honestly, all I can say is, NO WONDER Americans are overweight!!

If I Get Too Desperate, I'll Head To China.

BEIJING - China will have 30 million more men of marriageable age than women in less than 15 years as a gender imbalance resulting from the country’s tough one-child policy becomes more pronounced, state media reported Friday.

The tens of millions of men who will not be able to find a wife could also lead to social instability problems, the China Daily said in a front-page report.

All's Fair In Food

I was at the beach during the week of our county fair this year, so I missed the best part of the fair. Rachy's post was right on target as to the real reason we all love the fair: the food! And not just the food-- the food in all its fried glory! Funnel cakes are usually my favorite, but I did recently try some fried Oreos. They were.... rich. I think the reason we love Fried Fair Food so much is that we know we'll only eat it once a year. It's that special, rare indulgence that's soooooooo worth it.

I found this little nugget of news that I thought y'all would enjoy. Something for us all to look forward to next year.

Fried Coke has become the latest artery-clogging hit at US state fairs.

The gooey Coke-battered nuggets topped with cola syrup won the "most creative" title at the Texas state fair in Dallas last month. Since then, the deep-fried phenomenon has spread to North Carolina and Arizona.

"We've been getting calls from everywhere since we introduced it," Elizabeth Martin, a spokeswoman for the North Carolina fair, told the Dallas Morning News. "Everyone wants to know where they can get it."

Fried treats are as big of a draw at state fairs as the rides and prize-winning farm animals. Twinkies, cookies and even pickles are stuck with a stick, dipped in batter and then seared in the deep fryer.

Fried Coke's inventor, concessionaire Abel Gonzales Jr., is a creative fryer whose experiments have proven popular. Last year he sold 20,000 fried peanut butter, jelly and banana sandwiches, the Morning News reported. Fried Coke looks to be an even bigger hit: he sold 16,000 cups of the sticky balls in the first two weeks of the fair, which runs through Oct. 22.
Gonzales has also had more success with changing his recipe than Coca Cola did. He reworked the recipe to make the dough less cakey and more spongy so it would soak up more of the cola syrup.

"They were good before, but they are even better now," Gonzales said.
