On Sunday night I went out to dinner with the 'rents. Shocking most of all was the fact that my dad chose a Mexican restaurant! Perhaps you cannot appreciate how shocking this is, but, to my knowledge (and great disappointment), my dad has never voluntarily chosen to eat at a Mexican restaurant. [Maybe I better ask him before I make such a statement! :-D] Okay, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. If he has ever actually chosen a Mexican restaurant, it hasn't been in ages!
So, I'm feeling all cool, practicing my Spanish on the waiter. He's sorta laughing at me, but praising my efforts... which only encourages me. I place my order, specifying (in English) I want my enchiladas to be cheese (as opposed to pollo or frijoles or... um, I don't know the Spanish word for beef. Good thing I don't eat much beef.). Discovering an opportunity to use another of the few Spanish words I know, I say, "oh, queso!"
Instead of realizing I was confirming my order for "queso" enchiladas, the waiter apparently thought I was ordering a side of queso dip for the chips. As soon as he brought out the queso dip, I started laughing. I told my parents, "I think I accidentally ordered the queso dip."
Later, when my dad got the bill, he found the queso dip has cost him $3.75. "It cost me $3.75 just so you could practice your Spanish!! No more practicing!"
The hilarious irony of the story was that I didn't even like the queso dip.
Good times.
